Mobile Unified Communication (Part 2)

Instant Messaging and Presence via Mobile Phone, Smartphone and Tablet PC

Registration by User or Device

The XMPP Client user can take advantage of Instant Messaging and Presence at the workstation PC as well as with the mobile device. For the registration at the XMPP Server, two options are available: by person or by the device in use. Registering by user is done once by the Server no matter which device at which place is used for the Client login: the Client presence status is “available”, and colleagues know that they can reach this user. Registering by device, there are multiple registrations for the user e.g. as „Office“ and „Smart Phone“. Colleagues know by the respective presence status, on which device this user is available.

„Available at any time and any place“ – this was the original claim of Unified Messaging. Unified Messaging has gradually changed to Unified Communications, but the claim is still valid. Completing Presence and Instant Messaging with mobile access, IT went one step further in inspiring the buzz-words in real life: Access to time-asynchronous media like e-mail, Fax, SMS and Voice Mail can be done by mobile phones or Internet. Moreover, manufacturers like serVonic now offer the possibility to use real-time services like Presence or Instant Messaging at any time and any place.

Commentary of the Expert (Part 2)

However, we turn our attention not only to the current advantages, but also to the future prospects which are better for XMPP. XMPP offers a simple Server–Server interface which might be used in the future for connecting several company locations. It could also be the base for implementing external services, so that Instant Messaging and Presence are not only accessible in one company but also in the public network. In our opinion XMPP is likely to displace SIP/SIMPLE in the market: Other well-known manufacturers like Google Talk or Cisco also utilize XMPP, and Microsoft has opened Lync for the standard XMPP.
